For the Wontons
- ½ pound 225g ground pork (or chicken/shrimp)
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 2 green onions finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 20-25 wonton wrappers
For the Broth
- 6 cups 1.5 liters chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- ½ teaspoon white pepper optional, for a little heat
Optional Toppings
- Sliced green onions
- Chopped cilantro
- Bok choy or spinach
- Chili oil for extra spice
Step 1: Make the Wonton Filling
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork (or chosen protein), grated ginger, minced garlic, chopped green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, and cornstarch.
Mix everything well until the filling is smooth and evenly combined. Set aside.
Step 2: Fold the Wontons
Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface.
Add about 1 teaspoon of filling to the center.
Dip your finger in water and run it along the edges of the wrapper.
Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle, pressing the edges to seal.
Bring the two bottom corners together and press to seal (you can also leave them as simple triangles if preferred).
Repeat until all the filling is used.
Step 3: Make the Broth
In a large pot, heat the chicken broth over medium heat.
Add grated ginger, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, and white pepper.
Bring the broth to a gentle simmer and let it cook for 5-7 minutes to blend the flavors.
Step 4: Cook the Wontons
Bring a separate pot of water to a boil.
Carefully drop in the wontons, stirring gently to prevent sticking.
Cook for 3-5 minutes or until the wontons float to the top.
Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked wontons to serving bowls.
Step 5: Assemble the Soup
Pour the hot broth over the wontons in each bowl.
Add any optional toppings, such as sliced green onions, cilantro, or bok choy.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
