Equipment

  • Cutting board & sharp knife
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Measuring Cups & Spoons
  • Large Skillet or Wok
  • Tongs or Spatula
  • Small whisk or fork

Ingredients

For the Beef and Marinade:

  • 1 lb 450g beef (flank steak, sirloin, or ribeye), sliced thin
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

For the Sauce:

  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ cup water or beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger

For the Stir-Fry:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • ½ cup sliced onions optional
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional, for a little heat
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds for garnish
  • Cooked rice for serving

Instructions

Step 1: Marinate the Beef

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the sliced beef, soy sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, and sugar.
  • Stir well until the beef is evenly coated.
  • Let it sit for at least 10 minutes while you prep the rest of the ingredients. This helps tenderize the meat and adds flavor!

Step 2: Make the Stir-Fry Sauce

  • In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, cornstarch, sugar, water (or beef broth), garlic, and ginger.
  • Set the sauce aside—it’s going to bring everything together later!

Step 3: Cook the Broccoli

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in your skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  • Add the broccoli florets and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, until they turn bright green but are still slightly crisp.
  • If needed, add a splash of water to help steam and soften them a little.
  • Remove the broccoli from the pan and set it aside.

Step 4: Cook the Beef

  • In the same pan, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil.
  • Add the marinated beef in a single layer and let it sear for 1-2 minutes before stirring.
  • Stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes, until the beef is browned and cooked through.

Step 5: Bring It All Together

  • Give your stir-fry sauce a quick stir, then pour it into the pan with the beef.
  • Stir everything together and cook for 1-2 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
  • Add the broccoli back in, tossing it with the beef and sauce.
  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds (if using).

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy!

  • Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
  • Enjoy your homemade takeout-style meal!
